Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD: The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD . . . "The word of the LORD you have spoken is good," Hezekiah replied. For he thought, "Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?" (2 Kings 20:16–19 NIV)

In our self-centered world, it is difficult for us to think beyond ourselves. Sadly, most of us are like King Hezekiah who, when told of the judgment that God would inflict on Judah after his death, showed no concern about the future generations. This is narcissistic, short-term, single-generational thinking.
We must learn to think selflessly in terms of the big picture over the long term, that is, beyond our lifetimes. Therefore, we must learn to think multigenerationally.
To think multigenerationally means that we must invest in envisioning, preparing, and training the next generation like the karate master Miyagi did in the movie Karate Kid. |
Would you like some biblical thoughts on how to think multigenerationally?
Here is an excerpt from this teaching.
Here is an excerpt from this teaching.
This teaching is based on the Beyond Babel Model.
The Beyond Babel Model is a model for building your life and organizations based on the timeless universal principles found in the Bible. This Model was introduced in the book Beyond Babel written by Dr. Gerald Chester, founder of Strategies@Work, LLC. Using the Beyond Babel Model, this teaching presents biblically based best practices for building and managing multigenerational organizations. |
One of the roles of each generation is to prepare the next generation for the future.
Part of this preparation is vision for the future. Since God's metanarrative is multigenerational, our vision must be multigenerational.
Christian philosopher Dennis Peacocke expresses the truth of multi-generational thinking in the statement: "If your vision can be fulfilled in your lifetime, your vision is too small."
Sadly, most of us are not taught to think multigenerationally, therefore we don't.
So what should we do? How do we learn to think and act multigenerationally?
As with everything in life, we need to trained.
This teaching will challenge you to better understand the timeless universal principles (TUP) and therefore how to engage in building multigenerational organizations from a biblical worldview.
